Teddy Hansen’s paintings occupy a world where the familiar becomes wonderfully absurd. Combining natural imagery with eccentric characters, unexpected encounters and dreamlike narratives, Hansen creates paintings that are playful, irreverent and instinctively funny.

Born in 1997 and a graduate of Leeds Arts University, Hansen’s practice has evolved from sewing and rug-tufting into a broader exploration of painting, drawing and sculpture. Across these mediums, a tactile and instinctive approach remains central to his work.

Hansen begins each painting without necessarily knowing where it will lead. Ideas accumulate organically, allowing compositions and narratives to become increasingly elaborate as the work unfolds. Animals, people, landscapes and everyday objects are brought together in improbable situations, creating a visual language that feels at once childlike, surreal and completely self-assured.

With his distinctive visual language and increasingly confident approach to painting, Hansen represents an exciting emerging voice within contemporary British art. His work sits comfortably within the current appetite for artists who combine strong individual identity with humour, imagination and a genuine sense of spontaneity.

At the heart of Hansen’s practice is an embrace of the inner child — a rejection of over-analysis in favour of humour, experimentation and imagination. His paintings do not demand to be decoded.
