Blek Le Rat

Blek le Rat (b. 1951) is a French artist widely regarded as one of the pioneers of stencil art and an influential figure in the development of contemporary street art. Born Xavier Prou in Paris, he began working with stencils in the early 1980s, bringing a refined and often socially conscious approach to the streets of Paris.

Inspired in part by the visual language of graffiti and the Italian political stencil movement, Blek developed a distinctive practice based on stencilled imagery, often depicting people, animals and everyday subjects. His work combines immediacy with a strong graphic quality, addressing themes including society, identity, poverty and human experience.

Blek’s influence on contemporary street art is particularly significant. His pioneering use of stencils predates and helped establish a visual language later adopted and developed by artists around the world. His work is frequently cited as an important influence on Banksy, who has acknowledged Blek le Rat’s impact on his own practice.

Alongside his public works, Blek has developed an established studio practice, producing limited-edition prints and original works that have become sought after by collectors of contemporary and street art.

His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private collections worldwide. More than four decades after he first began working with stencils, Blek le Rat remains an important figure in the history of street art and a key influence on the contemporary stencil movement.
