Pietro Sanna

Pietro Sanna is an Italian contemporary artist and ceramicist, born in Sardinia and now based in York, England. Originally trained in painting and collage, Sanna began focusing on ceramics while studying Contemporary 3D Craft at York College, developing a practice centred around the expressive possibilities of clay.

Sanna creates hand-built and slip-cast vessels, using ceramic forms as three-dimensional canvases for layered narratives, imagery and text. His hand-built works often embrace uneven, asymmetrical forms, while his use of colour, texture, glaze and 24-carat gold lustre creates a distinctive visual language.

His work explores themes including life, love, identity, society and human experience, combining fine art with traditional craft and an intuitive approach to the material. Rather than treating his vessels simply as functional objects, Sanna uses them as carriers for stories and ideas.

Since graduating, his work has been exhibited at galleries and art fairs across the UK, and he continues to establish a distinctive presence within contemporary British ceramics.
